Head of Separation Science, Director of the Pfizer Analytical Research Centre
Ghent University
Ghent, Belgium

Website: www.richrom.com

Pat J. Sandra received his M.S. Degree in Chemistry in 1969 and his Ph.D. in Sciences in 1975 from the Ghent University, Belgium. Since then, he has been on the Faculty of Sciences at the same University where he is currently Professor in Separation Sciences at the Department of Organic Chemistry. In 1986 he founded the Research Institute for Chromatography (RIC) in Kortrijk, Belgium, a center of excellence for research and education in chromatography, mass spectrometry and capillary electrophoresis. He is currently also extraordinary professor at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, at the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Evora, Portugal and director of the Pfizer Analytical Research Center at the Ghent University.

He is the author or co-author of more than 420 scientific papers with peer review and wrote books on High Resolution GC, Sample Introduction in Capillary GC, Essential Oil Analysis, Micellar Electrokinetic Chromatography and Water Analysis.

He was the recipient of several awards and two doctor honoris causa in “Pharmacy” and “Food Chemistry and Safety”.

Theory and Practice of the Orbitrap Mass Analyzer

Dr. Alexander A. Makarov
Director of Global Research Life Sciences Mass Spectrometry
ThermoFisher Scientific GmbH
Bremen, Germany

Website: www.thermofisher.com

Alexander Makarov has defended his PhD thesis on time-of-flight mass spectrometry in Moscow Engineering Physics institute in 1992. In 1996 he joined a small high-tech company HD Technologies in Manchester, which was acquired in 2000 by Thermo Electron Corporation, where he started his work on a new type of mass analyzer- the orbitrap.

Alexander has played the leading role along the entire history of the orbitrap development, starting from the idea followed by proof-of-principle and until product development and support. This is quite unique to the history of mass spectrometry. Given the complexity and pitfalls in designing so novel mass analyzer, the fast pace of the work is also quite unusual, as it took only 6 years from the first public announcement in 1999 till the entry into mainstream mass spectrometry in 2005. He was awarded by H.E.Merck Award in 2007 and an ASMS Award for a Distinguished Contribution to Mass Spectrometry in 2008.
